Latest News....Unacceptable Amounts Of People In The UK Can Not Read, Write Or Count Properly

Mps have warned that there is an unacceptable amount of people in the UK who can not read, write or count properly. 2007 saw 51,000 pupils in the UK leave school without a GCSE of at least a D-G grade in maths and 31,000 with these grades in English.

Although the government has invested a lot of money - more than any other government - the committee of MPs said a lack of up-to-date information about skills and whether they were improving meant the governments scheme to improve basic skills was not measurable.

The government has a target of adult literacy and numeracy to reach 95% by 2020 but there are serious doubts as to whether the government can meet this target.  It is said that a new survey will be commissioned next year so measurements could be taken and serious action could follow.

It is believed that the English are not embarrassed to be bad at maths.  A report by think tank expressed that the drop in the number of people taking A-level maths would cost the economy £9billion as A-Level maths puts on average an extra £10,000 a year on a persons salary. People from all industries seems to be quite comfortable with the fact that they are rubbish at maths are quite happy to say it. This attitude has been put down to a failure in education and the media who tend to portray the subject in a geek like manner. Only one in five people with poor basic skills have enrolled on a course to help them.

It is hoped that this attitude will change.  Fun games which are not geeky at all could help bring about the change in attitude.  Sudoku is a well loved game which requires maths skills. Bingo is another fun game which can keep the mind in tip top condition.

Tests have proven that bingo players were faster and more accurate then those who do not play the game.  Players have to be able to check numbers off as they are called which requires rapid hand eye coordination.  Taking part in such activities can also help to maintain cognitive functions Iater in life. Recent studies have also shown that online bingo has a positive effect on the brain and can help to improve a person's mental capacity.
